Chateau D’If

July 15

Itinerary:

A guided visit to the Château d’If begins with a scenic boat ride across the Bay of Marseille, offering sweeping views of the Mediterranean coastline. Upon arrival, your guide introduces the fortress’s 16th-century origins as a royal stronghold later converted into a state prison. You’ll explore the damp stone cells and narrow corridors while hearing stories of famous (and fictional) prisoners, including the inspiration from The Count of Monte Cristo. The tour highlights the prison’s harsh conditions and its strategic role in defending Marseille’s harbor. From the ramparts, you can take in panoramic views of the sea, the Frioul Islands, and the distant city skyline. Your guide also explains the island’s ecological importance and its protected natural surroundings. The visit concludes with free time to wander the fort or enjoy the coastal scenery before returning by boat to Marseille.
